Danbury Democratic Town Committee

P.O. Box 164
Danbury, CT 06813

A regular meeting of the Democratic Town Committee was held on November 9, 2009 at Democratic headquarters.  The meeting was called to order at 7:35 P.M.

Present:  DaSilva, L, Merante, Anders, Gallo, McNamara, Coladarci, Cooke, Taylor, Schlemmer, R, Saadi, Conciatore, Eriquez, DaSilva, J, Schlemmer, W, Armstrong, Lees, White.

Absent:  Morgan, Abrantes, Rapp, Earle, Lewis, Tomaino, Gogliettino, and Kushner.

Tom Saadi made a motion to accept the call of the meeting.  Tina Merante seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

Linda DaSilva made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting.  Bruce Lees seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

Guest Speaker:  State Senator Gary LeBeau, who has formed an exploratory committee for the 2010 Connecticut gubernatorial race, spoke before the Town committee this evening.  He briefly outlined his experience and his ideas for rebuilding Connecticut.  He feels that the lack of new jobs is an issue and feels that it will take two terms as Governor to turn the State around.

Public Participation:  Chairman DaSilva recognized Lori Kaback, Bob Taborsak and Tom Saadi for their victories in the election.  Joe also thanked all who ran but did not win and urged them to continue to be involved with the party.

  1. Bob Taborsak said he was sorry to see Joan Hodge go.  He said she had expertise in special needs children and the lower grades.  He is very concerned about the school budget and feels it will probably be flat to last year.
  2. Warren Levy feels that the Democrats have suffered too many losses and feels we need a change in leadership.  Warren made reference to a comment by Coach Calhoun’ at a recent Chamber luncheon, who said, “if I wasn’t winning I wouldn’t be here”.
  3. Gary Goncalves felt that difficulty in raising money was a factor in his loss of the election.  He wondered if we would be doing a recap of the election as to what went wrong and how we could improve future election results.
  4. Paul McAllister said that he feels there are problems in the Democratic Party and the Town committee and he feels we need to change what we are doing.  Paul said that when Chris Setaro last the Mayoral election everyone was appalled and vowed to unite then but it hasn’t happened yet.
  5. Lori Kaback said that the election results indicate that it is time for a “new coach”.
  6. Al Robinson said that he couldn’t believe that 2009 results were worst than 2007 results.  Al said he polled some voters on the street and found that out of 24 registered Democrats only 4 voted for our candidate and that included the candidate and his wife. “Change needs to happen”.
  7. Phil Cervone said that he was a “new kid on the block” but he realized that the registered Democrats did not come out and vote.  He wondered if they didn’t like the choices or were there other reasons for the low voter turnout.
  8. Ben Chianese was very angry and berated the Town Committee for their lack of team effort.  He said that we have to change in order to be able to win again.

Correspondence:  No correspondence at this meeting.

Old Business:  Chairman DaSilva once again thanked all the candidates who ran in the election.  He said it was not a good election for Dems around the State.  City and State voter turnout was light.  He felt this was an “Old Danbury election”, familiar names did well and new candidates did not.

Rose Schlemmer took personal offense to Ben Chianese’s remarks about the lack of work done by Town Committee members.  She and her husband voted and she spent a lot of time at headquarters, phoning and stuffing envelopes.

Tom Saadi said that the demographics of the City have changed and we need to recalibrate our ideas and how we run an election.  Tom understood that fund raising was very difficult this election season but he feels that the pendulum has swung to the Republican side for far too long.

Glenda Armstrong feels we need some sort of framework for future elections in order to begin to win elections again. She suggested a de-briefing session.  Chairman DaSIlva agreed and appointed Glenda and Tom Saadi to co-chair that committee.

Ellen Cooke found that the phone calls were not well received.  People did not seem interested.  Is this a sign of the times?

Rose Schlemmer found that many people she called did not know who Gary was.  Was this in part a lack of cooperation from the News Times?

New Business:  Chairman DaSilva reminded us that the Town Committee terms are up in March and we will need to collect signatures for our Wards.  Joe will let us know when the petitions are available.  We will need to call a special meeting to appoint delegates for the State Conventions.

Treasurer:  We currently have a balance of $1338.33 in the bank.  Bruce Lees made a motion to accept the report and Bobbi Anders seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

State Central:  Jim Maloney urged the members to support Chris Dodd in his re-election bid.  Jim feels he will have a difficult time but can win in the end.

State Officials:  Bob Godfrey feels that many Democrats stayed home this election and that we must figure out why in order to win in the future.  Bob thinks that we are right on the issues and that we are the party of the future.

Joe Taborsak said he was disappointed with the election results.  He feels that we need to figure out what went wrong and what we can do to change the results of future elections.

Bruce Lees asked Jim Maloney what type of support would there be for a Democrat running for Governor.  Jim said that there would be a hugh effort to elect a Democratic Governor.

Local Officials:  Marge Gallo explained that the initial count for the fourth ward was incorrect and was corrected quickly.

Tom Saadi thanked Peter Nero for his hard work during the election.  He also thanked John Esposito for his many years of service.  Tom also said that now that the election is over, it is time for the Democrats to re-build the party.

Billy Taylor felt that all the candidates worked very hard during the election and more should have won.  He feels that we need to figure out what we are not doing to connect with the voters.

Committees:  No report this evening.

Wards:  No report this evening.

Linda DaSilva made a motion to adjourn the meeting.  Tina Merante seconded.  The meeting was adjourned at 9 P.M.

Respectfully submitted,
Catherine Conciatore
