Danbury Democratic Town Committee

A regular meeting of the Democratic Town Committee was held on January 11, 2010 at Democratic headquarters.  The meeting was called to order at 7:35 P.M.

Present:  DaSilva, L, Merante, , Gallo, Coladarci, Cooke, Taylor, Earle, Schlemmer, R, Saadi, Eriquez, DaSilva, J, Schlemmer, W, Armstrong,

Absent:  Morgan, Anders Abrantes, McNamara, Rapp, Lewis, Conciatore, Tomaino, Council, Gogliettino, Lees, White, and Kushner.

Wayne Schlemmer made a motion to accept the call of the meeting.  Bernie Gallo seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

Guest Speaker:  State Representative Denise Merrill, who is House Majority Leader and is serving her ninth term in the CT Legislature explained why she should be the next Secretary of State.  She wants to build on the Obama wave of new voters  and encourage them to stay engaged.

Guest Speaker:  Dan Malloy wants to run for Governor, explaining that we need someone who can win and someone with the experience.  He said he has debate skill and was Mayor of Stanford for 14 years.  He explained that Stanford is the second largest city in Ct with a strong infrastructure.  He says he has a vision for the future and wants an opportunity to run for Governor of CT.

Wayne Schlemmer made a motion to accept the minutes of the previous meeting.  Bernie Gallo seconded.  The motion passed unanimously.

Public Participation:  None

Correspondence:  No correspondence at this meeting.

New Business:  The DDTC election. Members are elected by petition. Petitions available January 13, 2010 and must be returned to the registrar’s office no later than 4:00 pm on January 27, 2010.  The petition process was reviewed. 5% of the Democrats in a ward must sign.  Candidates may form a slate to obtain signatures.  If more than 4 individuals submit a petition for a ward, the Primary will be held March 2, 2010. The existing Town Committee will meet in February and call the March meeting.  At that time the new members will take their seats and elect officers.

                        2010 Election. This is a state and federal election.  Nancy Wyman and Denise Nappier will run again.  Dick Blumanthal wants to run for Senate.  The DDTC should endorse Blumanthal. Coladarci moved that we endorse Dick Blumanthal for Senate for the 2010 election, second by Gene Eriquez.  Glenda Armstrong asked if we have a process. Joe DaSilvas explained we have endorsed candidates on a case by case basis.  Vote unanimous, with Armstrong abstaining.

                        Convention dates were reviewed for May 2010. We have conventions for 138th, 2nd, 24th, Congressional and State.  Delegates will be named in March.

                        Public fundraising is being discussed in the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals. 

Treasurer Report. Linda DaSilva reported that the reporting period opened with $1338.33, we took in $1930.00.  The expenses for this period were $1389.24 leaving a balance of $1879.09.  The holiday party net $1120.15.Bernie Gallo moved to accept, 2nd by Gene Eriquez. The motion passed unanimously.

State Central Committee. Jim Maloney reported that there was a fundraiser for Chris Murphy and $15,000 was raised.  We all must support Murphy for Congress.

State. Joe Taborsak We need Dan Malloy in the Governor’s seat and wants to thank Denis Merrill for coming to talk with us. We wish them both good luck and it is a good tome for Ds to take the opportunity to jump into a campaign.

Registrar. Marge Gallo reminded everyone running for the Town Committee that the dates are January 13th for pick up of petitions and January 27th to turn them in.

Old Business. Glenda Armstrong asked about the election recommendations discussed during the year, adding we should look to the past as we move to the future. 

Bernie Gallo moved adjournment at 8:40 pm, 2nd by Linda DaSilva. The motion passed unanimously.
