Paul Sutherland is a Connecticut native, who grew up in Wilton. After spending 25 years of his adult life in Florida, he moved to Ridgefield in 2001 and Danbury in 2016. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the LVA School on Main St. in Danbury, where he has taught literacy for over 10 years. His Brazilian-American wife, Irene, and he moved to Danbury because of its diversity and potential for economic growth.
Mr. Sutherland has over 30 years of corporate financial experience, including 20 years with FPL Group (now NextEra Energy) and its principal operating subsidiary, Florida Power and Light Company. While there, he worked in budgeting, accounting, financial systems and corporate finance, holding positions of Director of Finance for Energy Marketing & Trading, and Assistant Treasurer of FPL Group and its utility subsidiary. He is currently Senior Advisor with Saber Partners, LLC, a small Wall Street firm providing specialized financial consultingservices to issuers of AAA-rated debt.
Mr. Sutherland was elected to the Ridgefield Board of Education in 2007. On the Negotiating Committee of the BOE, hechampioned the move to health savings accounts as a way to maintain employee health benefits while controlling spiraling healthcare costs. This saved the school district over $1 million per year, which allowed the district to institute full day kindergarten. In 2011, he was elected to the Board of Finance, serving as vice-chairman from 2011-2014. He was re-elected to the BOF in 2015 before moving to Danbury. During his 5-year tenure on the BOF, the annual growth rate of the property tax mill rate was below 1.2%.
Mr. Sutherland has an engineering degree from Cornell University and an MBA from the University of Chicago. He was in the Peace Corps in Brazil for two years and is fluent in Portuguese.
